Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Project Controller – Accounting to join our project team in Mauritania. The successful candidate will be responsible for the financial and accounting control of the project, with a strong focus on project cost control, budget monitoring, actual cost tracking, forecasting, financial reporting, and project accounting activities. This role will play a key part in monitoring project financial performance, identifying cost deviations, supporting month-end closing, and providing accurate financial information to project management for effective decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Project Cost Control & Accounting
- Monitor and control the project budget, actual costs, commitments, accruals, provisions, and forecasts.
- Perform project cost calculations and ensure costs are correctly recorded and allocated to the appropriate cost centers, cost codes, projects, and work packages.
- Monitor Budget vs. Actual Cost and analyze significant cost variances.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project cost records and financial data.
- Review and validate project-related invoices, purchase orders, subcontractor invoices, and payment documentation.
- Coordinate with Accounting and Finance teams to ensure timely and accurate posting of project costs.
- Monitor accounts payable and project-related payments and follow up on outstanding items.
- Prepare and maintain accruals and provisions for costs incurred but not yet invoiced.
- Support monthly and year-end financial closing processes and ensure costs are recognized in the correct accounting period.
- Monitor project commitments and outstanding purchase orders to support accurate financial forecasting.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Reporting
- Prepare and regularly update project cost forecasts and financial projections.
- Support the preparation and monitoring of Estimate at Completion (EAC).
- Analyze cost trends and identify potential cost overruns, savings, and financial risks.
- Prepare monthly project cost and financial reports for management.
- Provide clear explanations for budget and cost variances.
- Monitor project cash flow and support cash flow forecasting.
- Prepare financial dashboards and management reports to support project decision-making.
- Support internal and client-facing project financial reporting when required.
Procurement, Contracts & Subcontractor Cost Control
- Monitor purchase orders, commitments, invoices, and payments related to suppliers and subcontractors.
- Review subcontractor invoices and supporting documentation against contractual terms, progress, and approved quantities.
- Coordinate with Procurement and Contracts teams regarding financial commitments and variations.
- Monitor the financial impact of change orders, variations, claims, and additional works.
- Ensure approved changes are properly reflected in project cost forecasts.
- Support the financial evaluation of supplier and subcontractor claims.
Project Performance & Compliance
- Monitor project financial performance against the approved budget and cost baseline.
- Identify financial risks, discrepancies, and potential cost overruns and communicate them to the Project Manager and Finance team.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, financial procedures, and project control processes.
- Maintain proper documentation and audit trails for project financial transactions.
- Support internal and external audits by providing relevant financial and accounting documentation.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of project financial data.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of project accounting and cost-control processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in project accounting, cost control, project controls, or financial controlling, preferably within EPC, construction, energy, or renewable energy projects.
- Strong knowledge of project and cost accounting, budget control, cost allocation, accruals, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Proven experience with Budget vs. Actual analysis, cost variance analysis, EAC, and project cost forecasting.
- Experience with month-end closing, supplier/subcontractor invoices, payments, purchase orders, commitments, and accruals.
- Understanding of change orders, variations, claims, and their financial impact on EPC projects.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and strong analytical/numerical skills.
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics is an advantage.
- Knowledge of Primavera P6, Power BI, or similar project control tools is an advantage.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle confidential financial information with integrity.
- Strong communication and coordination skills and ability to work in a multicultural international project environment.
- Fluency in English is required; French and/or Arabic is an advantage.
- Willingness to be based in Mauritania and work in a project/site environment.
