We are looking for an accomplished and strategic Solar & BESS Project Director to lead the successful delivery of utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects based in New Zealand. The successful candidate will provide executive leadership across multiple EPC projects, ensuring excellence in project execution, commercial performance, client satisfaction, and organizational growth.
This role is responsible for the overall leadership of project teams from project award through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and final handover. The Project Director will drive project governance, oversee Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams, manage key client relationships, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for multiple utility-scale Solar PV and BESS EPC projects based in New Zealand.
- Lead Project Managers and multidisciplinary delivery teams to ensure successful execution throughout the entire project lifecycle.
- Establish project execution strategies aligned with company objectives, contractual obligations, and client expectations.
- Maintain full accountability for project safety, quality, schedule, budget, profitability, and risk management.
- Oversee engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project controls to ensure seamless project delivery.
- Develop and implement project governance, reporting structures, and executive-level performance monitoring.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, utilities, investors, consultants, and key project stakeholders.
- Lead executive-level commercial negotiations, contract administration, claims management, and dispute resolution.
- Monitor project financial performance, cash flow, forecasts, margins, and change management processes.
- Ensure compliance with New Zealand regulatory requirements, grid connection obligations, HSEQ standards, and contractual commitments.
- Support Project Managers in resolving complex technical, contractual, commercial, and operational challenges.
- Oversee subcontractor and supplier performance while ensuring effective interface management across all project disciplines.
- Provide executive reporting to senior leadership regarding project performance, risks, opportunities, and strategic decisions.
- Lead project close-out activities, final acceptance, commercial settlement, and transition to the Operations & Maintenance team.
- Promote continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and implementation of best practices across the global project organization.
- Mentor and develop Project Managers and future project leadership within the business.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 12 years of experience delivering large-scale EPC infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
- Minimum 5 years in a senior project leadership role such as Project Director, Senior Project Manager, or Programme Manager.
- Proven experience leading multiple utility-scale Solar PV EPC projects; BESS experience is highly desirable.
- Extensive knowledge of EPC contracting, project governance, commercial management, and project controls.
- Strong understanding of Australian utility-scale renewable energy project delivery, grid connection processes, and construction practices.
- Demonstrated success managing large multidisciplinary teams across engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and commercial functions.
- Strong experience managing executive client relationships, contract negotiations, claims, and commercial risk.
- Excellent financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and project profitability.
- Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Experience working within international EPC organizations and multicultural environments.
- Proficiency in Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent project management systems.
- PMP, IPMA, or equivalent project management certification is highly desirable.
- Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Willingness to travel extensively and undertake long-term assignments based in New Zealand.
