Deputy Project Manager – HV Substation & BESS

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Deputy Project Manager – HV Substation & BESS to support the successful delivery of a large-scale renewable energy project in Mauritania.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Project Manager to coordinate HV Substation and BESS activities across Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning, and Handover, ensuring compliance with project schedule, technical, quality, contractual, and HSE requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Project Manager in the overall execution of HV Substation and BESS scopes from engineering and procurement through construction, commissioning, energization, and handover.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage interfaces between HV, MV, BESS, SCADA/EMS, civil, and other project disciplines.
• Coordinate HV substation activities, including major equipment such as transformers, GIS/AIS, switchgear, protection and control systems, CTs/VTs, busbars, and auxiliary systems.
• Coordinate BESS activities, including battery containers, PCS, transformers, MV systems, HVAC, fire protection, EMS/SCADA, and control systems.
• Monitor engineering deliverables, technical approvals, design changes, RFIs, procurement, manufacturing, delivery, installation, and testing.
• Support Construction Management in coordinating subcontractors, work packages, construction progress, productivity, quality, HSE, and recovery actions.
• Work closely with Project Controls to monitor schedule, progress, cost, critical path activities, and project risks.
• Support the management of variations, change orders, claims, and potential commercial or schedule impacts.
• Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, commissioning teams, and the grid operator regarding technical, delivery, testing, and energization requirements.
• Support pre-commissioning, HV testing, BESS testing, grid connection, energization, functional testing, punch-list closure, and final handover.
• Ensure compliance with HSE, QA/QC, ITPs, technical specifications, and applicable standards, particularly for HV electrical and BESS-specific risks.
• Support client and stakeholder management, project meetings, reporting, risk management, and project documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• 8–10+ years of relevant experience in project management, construction management, or project execution within the power, HV, renewable energy, or BESS sectors.
• Proven experience in HV substation and/or BESS projects, preferably within large-scale EPC projects.
• Strong understanding of HV substations, grid connection infrastructure, protection and control systems, and BESS technologies.
• Experience with major HV equipment such as transformers, GIS/AIS, switchgear, and protection systems.
• Practical knowledge of BESS systems, including battery systems, PCS, MV systems, EMS/SCADA, HVAC, and fire protection.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning activities.
• Experience managing subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, consultants, clients, and other stakeholders.
• Strong knowledge of EPC project execution, scheduling, cost and progress control, risk management, and project reporting.
• Experience with testing, commissioning, energization, and grid connection is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of HSE requirements for HV electrical works and BESS installations.
• Strong communication, leadership, coordination, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Primavera P6, Power BI, SAP, or other project control tools are an advantage.
• Fluent English is required; French and/or Arabic is an advantage.
• Willingness to be based in Mauritania for the duration of the project.
